Hempitecture Awarded $8.4m from the Department of Energy
By Jackie Smith, HempBuild Magazine
The Biden-Harris Administration’s “Investing in America” initiative continues to strengthen U.S. manufacturing and clean energy supply chains with $428 million in funding for 14 projects, focused on revitalizing former coal communities. Selected by the Department of Energy (DOE), these projects aim to boost domestic production, cut pollution, and create over 1,900 jobs. The initiative emphasizes leveraging local talent and skills, helping coal communities transition to clean energy while strengthening national security and industrial competitiveness. The projects will attract over $500 million in private investments, targeting key supply chains like batteries, low-carbon materials, and clean power generation.
Among the recipients is Hempitecture Inc., which secured $8.4 million to build an industrial hemp processing facility in Jerome, Idaho. This facility will manufacture eco-friendly building materials, packaging, and automotive products with reduced carbon intensity. CEO Matthew Mead highlighted the project’s potential to create 25 full-time jobs and drive economic growth, expanding their operations into eastern Tennessee. Hempitecture’s selection underscores the role of biobased materials in the clean energy transition and presents an opportunity for continued investor support through their current fundraising efforts.
