Seven Founding Fathers who farmed Hemp and advocated for it

By 420 Intel

On July 4, 1776—248 years ago—the Second Continental Congress unanimously adopted the Declaration of Independence, announcing the colonies’ separation from Great Britain. Many of them not only grew hemp but insisted how important the plant is to the foundation of American agriculture. Sorting through rumors about the Founding Fathers and hemp is another story, with invented quotes and misinformation.

The Declaration’s blanket assertion, “all Men are created equal,” should be taken with a grain of salt given that many Founding Fathers owned slaves, and Thomas Jefferson’s and Henry Clay’s slaves also grew hemp. It would take a lot longer for actual equal rights to materialize.

In colonial times, hemp was an acceptable form of tax payment for over 150 years. Here’s the top Founding Fathers who farmed, milled, processed, or advocated for hemp.

Textile hemp, a natural fiber with unique properties and ancient origins, has gone through a difficult period when its cultivation, starting in 1937 with the Marijuana Tax Act, has been prohibited almost everywhere in the world. Decades of prohibition have destroyed the entire hemp industry almost everywhere in the world, with the exception of very few countries in the world. In Europe, a limited amount of hemp (for seed and fiber) has always been grown in one European country, which is now ready to exploit the full potential of textile hemp.

I am referring to France , a European power that de facto has not stopped believing in hemp, continuing to produce the fibre despite global prohibition, a decision that has proven to be a winning card.

In this article we retrace the historical development of hemp in France and introduce the players in the sector.
