While the U.S. Hemp Industry Faces Setbacks, Opportunities Are Ripe in the EU
By Beau Whitney, Chief Economist, Whitney Economics
This article is excerpted from the just-released Hemp Industry 2023 Opportunities Report, which can be ordered here.
Short-term setbacks and the unintended consequences of state laws are creating new headaches for hemp industry operators in the United States. Despite this, there is an opportunity to build stable markets with European and Canadian partners.
Last year was a particularly tough year for the U.S. hemp industry. Licensed acreage was down significantly in a majority of states. Total acres licensed declined approximately 68% from 2021 after declining by 53% the year before. Whitney Economics uses acres licensed as a measure of capacity and potential of the hemp industry, rather than relying on the number of acres planted and harvested.
EnviroTextiles Aims to Standardize Hemp Fabric Production to Ensure Consistent Quality
By Elizabeth Lunt
EnviroTextiles, a pioneering company in the hemp and natural fiber industry, is based in Glenwood Springs, Colorado, but operates internationally, shipping hemp fabrics to clients in more than 74 countries from production facilities in Eastern Europe and China.
Company owners Barbara Filippone (left) and her daughter, Summer Star Haeske (right), say EnviroTextiles’ database has over 15,000 active clients who produce hemp products. The company is building out an online hemp mall so customers can see “all these amazing hemp products and join our mission,” said Haeske, international sales and marketing director for EnviroTextiles, which she and Filippone founded in 2001.
As 9th Annual Hemp Expo Nears, Make Sure You Don’t Fall Prey to Online Scammers
By Let’s Talk Hemp
As excitement builds around the 9th Annual NoCo Hemp Expo, to be held at The Broadmoor Resort from March 29-31, organizers are sounding the alarm about online “list scammers” and “hotel poachers” who have latched onto trade shows and conferences worldwide.
Shady online companies, mostly based overseas to skirt the U.S. legal system, offer to sell fake exhibitor or attendee lists. Other illicit companies claim that hotels for the event are full and offer to book alternate lodging. Participants duped by these scams may have their credit card charged for a fake hotel or arrive to find no reservation.

Help Rebuild Ukraine With Hemp
Sergiy Kovalenkov, aka Doctor Hemphouse, one of the world’s renowned specialists in building with hemp, is appealing to the hemp industry for help in rebuilding war-torn Ukraine, including building Ukraine’s biggest social housing project to date — a 10,000-square-foot residential building to house refugees and orphans who lost their parents to the war. In particular, the project is seeking builders, sponsors, automated block-making machinery and a hempcrete spraying system.
