Seeds of the Future
By Natalie Kra
Like many in the industry, Matt Haddad’s cannabis journey started at home. His early days were spent growing and selling cannabis in forest preserves in & around Chicagoland. When Colorado legalized recreational THC consumption at the turn of 2014, Matt’s journey took him Westword. With him, he brought the brand and brains behind the prominent seed company – The Cali Connection. At the time, The Cali Connection was a pioneer in creating feminized seeds and creating new genetics for the medical THC market.

New US House Bill Proposes Guidelines for CBD in Food and Beverages
By Jean Lotus
A bipartisan group from the US House of Representatives introduced a bill last week that would provide a regulatory framework for hemp-based CBD in food and beverages.
The proposed CBD Product Safety and Standardization Act of 2021 would amend the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act to include CBD (cannabidiol) and provide recommendations on maximum daily usage and provide packaging and serving guidelines.

Jason Amatucci
By Morris Beegle
Welcome to my Let’s Talk Hemp weekly industry profile – Shine on You – where I get to feature folks involved in the industry and who are doing important and interesting work from various corners and crevices of the hemp space. This week I have Jason Amatucci, President of the Virginia Hemp Coalition. Jason came to NoCo2 (2nd Annual NoCo Hemp Expo) in Loveland, CO when we moved over to the Ranch Events Complex in 2015. Since that time, I’ve had the pleasure of connecting with Jason around the country and most notably in Cologne, Germany, for the EIHA Conference in 2018 and Queen with Adam Lambert, Live At Lanzess Arena.
Let’s get to know Jason a bit better and why he loves hemp!

Save Ti & His 329 Rights
If you or a loved one are a medical cannabis patient, this affects you. Ti is an autistic 15 year old who was abruptly removed from his mother/medical caregiver on June 3, 2021 by Child Welfare Services in Hawaii. This GoFundMe has been set up to pay for his legal fees needed to promptly dismiss the CWS case and enforce their civil and medical rights to have access to his medical professionals to participate in providing for his medical needs. Any donation no matter how big or small means we are that much closer to getting Ti back.
Support H.R. 841, The Hemp and Hemp-Derived CBD Consumer Protection and Market Stabilization Act
In September 2020, U.S. Reps. Kurt Schrader (D-OR) and Morgan Griffith (R-VA) introduced the Hemp and Hemp-Derived CBD Consumer Protection and Market Stabilization Act – a bill which would provide a clear legal pathway for the sale of hemp extracts like CBD, while ensuring that products must comply with the rigorous regulatory framework existing for dietary supplements. The bill garnered broad bi-partisan support. On Feb. 7, 2021, Reps. Schrader and Griffith and 17 of their colleagues reintroduced the bill as H.R. 841. Support passage of the bill here.
Urge Your Members of Congress to Support Our Troops’ Access to CBD
On July 20, 2020, the U.S. House of Representatives approved an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) to allow service members to use products containing hemp, including CBD. Unfortunately, the amendment was not included in the Senate’s version of the NDAA, which passed on July 23, and was not included in the final bill. However, as a new Congress meets this year, they are hoping for another hearing. Learn more.
Sign the 1% Hemp Petition
The 2018 Farm Bill authorized hemp production but used an outdated definition of hemp that does not work for farmers or the hemp industry. The current definition limiting hemp to 0.3% THC has proven unworkable, forcing many farmers to destroy their crops. Congress must change the definition of hemp to allow up to 1% THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) so that farmers can grow hemp without fearing that they will later have to destroy them. Add your name to the Vote Hemp petition urging Congress to redefine hemp as up to 1% THC.
