Shine on You: Let’s Talk Hemp Q&A Profile with Mandi Kerr
By Morris Beegle
Welcome to my Let’s Talk Hemp weekly industry profile – Shine on You – where I get to feature folks involved in the industry and who are doing important and interesting work from various corners and crevices of the hemp space. This week I have Mandi Kerr, Founder and CEO of the Global Hemp Association. Mandi is a relative newcomer to the hemp space, but someone that has brought fresh perspective and energy that is much needed. She has created an organization that connects long time hemp leadership with new members coming in from verticals the hemp industry needs to focus on servicing. She has done an excellent job at bridging the gap and connecting people who all play a role in moving the hemp industry forward.
Let’s get to know Mandi a bit better and why she loves hemp!

Hemp Industry Certifications – Whom Can You Trust?
By Marielle Weintraub, Ph.D.
As hemp emerges from prohibition to a thriving industry, certification programs have been cropping up like weeds. These fill a needed vacuum: With FDA still refusing to regulate popular hemp products like CBD, retailers and consumers are left confused and concerned about what’s actually in the items they sell and purchase.
But hemp and CBD buyers and sellers should also beware of what’s actually in the certification programs themselves. Indeed, some threaten the integrity of the hemp industry and undermine consumer confidence in hemp products.

Save Ti & His 329 Rights
If you or a loved one are a medical cannabis patient, this affects you. Ti is an autistic 15 year old who was abruptly removed from his mother/medical caregiver on June 3, 2021 by Child Welfare Services in Hawaii. This GoFundMe has been set up to pay for his legal fees needed to promptly dismiss the CWS case and enforce their civil and medical rights to have access to his medical professionals to participate in providing for his medical needs. Any donation no matter how big or small means we are that much closer to getting Ti back.
Support H.R. 841, The Hemp and Hemp-Derived CBD Consumer Protection and Market Stabilization Act
In September 2020, U.S. Reps. Kurt Schrader (D-OR) and Morgan Griffith (R-VA) introduced the Hemp and Hemp-Derived CBD Consumer Protection and Market Stabilization Act – a bill which would provide a clear legal pathway for the sale of hemp extracts like CBD, while ensuring that products must comply with the rigorous regulatory framework existing for dietary supplements. The bill garnered broad bi-partisan support. On Feb. 7, 2021, Reps. Schrader and Griffith and 17 of their colleagues reintroduced the bill as H.R. 841. Support passage of the bill here.
Urge Your Members of Congress to Support Our Troops’ Access to CBD
On July 20, 2020, the U.S. House of Representatives approved an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) to allow service members to use products containing hemp, including CBD. Unfortunately, the amendment was not included in the Senate’s version of the NDAA, which passed on July 23, and was not included in the final bill. However, as a new Congress meets this year, they are hoping for another hearing. Learn more.
Sign the 1% Hemp Petition
The 2018 Farm Bill authorized hemp production but used an outdated definition of hemp that does not work for farmers or the hemp industry. The current definition limiting hemp to 0.3% THC has proven unworkable, forcing many farmers to destroy their crops. Congress must change the definition of hemp to allow up to 1% THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) so that farmers can grow hemp without fearing that they will later have to destroy them. Add your name to the Vote Hemp petition urging Congress to redefine hemp as up to 1% THC.
