Take advantage of this opportunity for HEMP farmers processing or HEMP processors to participate in a multi-year study being conducted by the CDC/NIOSH in collaboration with the ASTM D37.
The ASTM D37.04 Occupational Health and Safety Initiative has been working diligently to coordinate with NIOSH on a multi-year study related to occupational health and safety hazards associated with the cultivation and processing of cannabis plants. Given the current federal legalization status, NIOSH is only able to work with HEMP licensees at the moment but is looking to move into marijuana when able.
The study is moving into Phase 2, and NIOSH is looking for HEMP farmers and processors from different regions of the US to join this study and help inform the development of occupational health and safety standards.
- Project Description: NIOSH aims to develop a laboratory model to understand health risks associated with industrial HEMP dust exposure, using workplace data to inform the design of laboratory-based studies.
- Worksite Visit: NIOSH will collect aerosolized, surface, and engineering system dust samples across various worksite locations over an 8-hour workday without disrupting normal operations.
- Anticipated Impact: Insights from the study will support the development of safe work practices and exposure control measures to protect HEMP industry workers from adverse health effects.
