Judy Wicks: Bringing Local Strength to Pennsylvania Hemp

By Jean Lotus

Judy Wicks, Pennsylvania author, businesswoman and fierce advocate of local economies, has turned her attention to hemp through her nonprofit All Together Now PA.

Hemp’s reintroduction as a new rotational crop in the United States fits well with the organization’s mission to unite rural and urban communities and build “resilient restorative local economies that produce basic needs locally,” Wicks told Let’s Talk Hemp.

Ex SpaceX Engineers Making Hemp-Based OSB, Structural Timber

By Jean Lotus

A North Carolina company, staffed with former engineers from SpaceX, hopes to win space billionaire Elon Musk’s XPrize with carbon-sequestering oriented strand board (OSB) and structural timber made from hemp.

Durham NC-based Plantd Materials is using fast-growing hemp stalk biomass to make tree-free wood substitutes to lock away atmospheric CO2 in the structures of homes, with 10 home builders signing on to use the materials in the next year, the company said.

Shine on You: Let’s Talk Hemp Q&A Profile with Morris Beegle and Alicia Fall

By Morris Beegle

Welcome to my new Let’s Talk Hemp weekly industry profile – Shine on You – where I get to feature folks involved in the industry and who are doing important and interesting work from various corners and crevices of the hemp space. This is the second installment and this week I am pleased to have Alicia Fall from Her Many Voices as my guest. I met Alicia I believe years ago at a Melissa Ivey show (there’s a connection there) in Denver but then reconnected with her at the Asian Hemp Summit in Kathmandu Nepal in early 2019. She recently exhibited and presented at the 3rd annual Southern Hemp Expo that took place in Raleigh in the beginning of September.

Let’s get to know Alicia a bit better and why she loves hemp!

Alicia Fall (Eastern Band Tsalagi/Cuban Taino) has been an educator, performing artist and public speaker for over 35 years, addressing environmental and humanitarian issues. Speaking on Hemp and Humanity, Fall has been on the international hemp speaking circuit since 2018.

Save Ti & His 329 Rights

If you or a loved one are a medical cannabis patient, this affects you. Ti is an autistic 15 year old who was abruptly removed from his mother/medical caregiver on June 3, 2021 by Child Welfare Services in Hawaii. This GoFundMe has been set up to pay for his legal fees needed to promptly dismiss the CWS case and enforce their civil and medical rights to have access to his medical professionals to participate in providing for his medical needs. Any donation no matter how big or small means we are that much closer to getting Ti back.

Support H.R. 841, The Hemp and Hemp-Derived CBD Consumer Protection and Market Stabilization Act

In September 2020, U.S. Reps. Kurt Schrader (D-OR) and Morgan Griffith (R-VA) introduced the Hemp and Hemp-Derived CBD Consumer Protection and Market Stabilization Act – a bill which would provide a clear legal pathway for the sale of hemp extracts like CBD, while ensuring that products must comply with the rigorous regulatory framework existing for dietary supplements. The bill garnered broad bi-partisan support. On Feb. 7, 2021, Reps. Schrader and Griffith and 17 of their colleagues reintroduced the bill as H.R. 841. Support passage of the bill here.

Urge Your Members of Congress to Support Our Troops’ Access to CBD

On July 20, 2020, the U.S. House of Representatives approved an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) to allow service members to use products containing hemp, including CBD. Unfortunately, the amendment was not included in the Senate’s version of the NDAA, which passed on July 23, and was not included in the final bill. However, as a new Congress meets this year, they are hoping for another hearing. Learn more.

Sign the 1% Hemp Petition

The 2018 Farm Bill authorized hemp production but used an outdated definition of hemp that does not work for farmers or the hemp industry. The current definition limiting hemp to 0.3% THC has proven unworkable, forcing many farmers to destroy their crops. Congress must change the definition of hemp to allow up to 1% THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) so that farmers can grow hemp without fearing that they will later have to destroy them.
