Hands-On Farming Results In Top-Shelf Hemp
By Doug Fine
Regenerative Hemp Farmer,
Author of American Hemp Farmer and Hemp Bound
A one-sentence summary of this essay is, “Please buy hemp/cannabis grown by regenerative, farmer-owned enterprises.” If you want to skip the saving-humanity-by-sequestering-carbon side of things, one reason to consciously support independent regenerative hemp farmers (of all parts of the plant), is because in so doing, you’ll almost certainly get the best quality hemp products.
Think terroir: our regional farmer-run enterprises are already becoming established as the parmesan and champagne of hemp. I don’t know whether the hundreds of hemp farmers in dozens of states with whom I’m spoken about “going entrepreneurial” collectively count as empirical or anecdotal research, but artisan hemp producers all over the world are banking on their top-shelf products winning out in the real world, the way fresh-squeezed oranges beat frozen concentrate. Think “many regional hemp providers” rather than “a few giant McCokeMarts of hemp.”

Organic Trade Association to Host Hemp Listening Session on August 5
The nation’s leading trade association for producers, processors and handlers of USDA certified organic products, the Organic Trade Association (OTA), will host a special Organic Hemp Listening Session on Thursday, August 5, 2021, 2:00 pm Eastern Time. Registration for the online Zoom session is free.
Gwendolyn Wyard, OTA’s VP of Regulatory and Technical Affairs and the association’s hemp specialist, will present a brief overview of OTA to kick off the session, “and then we will go into full listening mode,” she said.
“We want to hear from the organic hemp sector about the challenges, barriers and opportunities that are unique to certified organic production, handling and the organic certification process. Participants will have an opportunity to learn more about the work of the Organic Trade Association and share their views on how we can best support the growth of organic hemp production and hemp products,” Wyard added.

Save Ti & His 329 Rights
If you or a loved one are a medical cannabis patient, this affects you. Ti is an autistic 15 year old who was abruptly removed from his mother/medical caregiver on June 3, 2021 by Child Welfare Services in Hawaii. This GoFundMe has been set up to pay for his legal fees needed to promptly dismiss the CWS case and enforce their civil and medical rights to have access to his medical professionals to participate in providing for his medical needs. Any donation no matter how big or small means we are that much closer to getting Ti back.
Support H.R. 841, The Hemp and Hemp-Derived CBD Consumer Protection and Market Stabilization Act
In September 2020, U.S. Reps. Kurt Schrader (D-OR) and Morgan Griffith (R-VA) introduced the Hemp and Hemp-Derived CBD Consumer Protection and Market Stabilization Act – a bill which would provide a clear legal pathway for the sale of hemp extracts like CBD, while ensuring that products must comply with the rigorous regulatory framework existing for dietary supplements. The bill garnered broad bi-partisan support. On Feb. 7, 2021, Reps. Schrader and Griffith and 17 of their colleagues reintroduced the bill as H.R. 841. Support passage of the bill here.
Urge Your Members of Congress to Support Our Troops’ Access to CBD
On July 20, 2020, the U.S. House of Representatives approved an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) to allow service members to use products containing hemp, including CBD. Unfortunately, the amendment was not included in the Senate’s version of the NDAA, which passed on July 23, and was not included in the final bill. However, as a new Congress meets this year, they are hoping for another hearing. Learn more.
Sign the 1% Hemp Petition
The 2018 Farm Bill authorized hemp production but used an outdated definition of hemp that does not work for farmers or the hemp industry. The current definition limiting hemp to 0.3% THC has proven unworkable, forcing many farmers to destroy their crops. Congress must change the definition of hemp to allow up to 1% THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) so that farmers can grow hemp without fearing that they will later have to destroy them. Add your name to the Vote Hemp petition urging Congress to redefine hemp as up to 1% THC.
Fix, Marry or Kill? Hemp Needs Your Help in HI, MA, MN and MO

Let’s Bring Industrial Hemp to Farm Aid
In 1985, Willie Nelson, Neil Young and John Mellencamp decided to put on a concert for America’s family farmers who were in dire need of assistance. They raised over $7 million in that first year and Farm Aid have been helping to support America’s family farmers ever since. We’re asking you to join us in asking Farm Aid to make industrial hemp a focus of this year’s event and into the future. Sign the petition here.
Urge Support for AB 45 and SB 235 in California
AB 45 and SB 235 are the California state Assembly and Senate versions of a bill that would allow the distribution and sale of hemp-derived CBD as a food, beverage, and dietary supplement, and make clear that a product is not adulterated or misbranded due to the inclusion of hemp. These are high-priority bills that have been near passage in California since 2019. If signed into law, AB 45 and SB 235 will open an important retail market for CBD consumers. Take action here.
Support S. 1698, The Hemp Access and Consumer Safety Act
S. 1698, The Hemp Access and Consumer Safety Act, which would establish a legal and regulatory pathway for the sale of hemp-derived extract products such as CBD as dietary supplements and food and beverage additives., needs your support. We applaud Senators Ron Wyden (D-OR), Rand Paul (R-KY) and Jeff Merkley (D-OR) for sponsoring this bill ,which will help stabilize hemp markets, open a promising economic opportunity for U.S. farmers, and protect consumers by requiring hemp extract product manufacturers to comply with the entire existing comprehensive regulatory framework for ingestible products. Urge your Senators to support S. 1698 – visit this form letter at hempsupporter.com.
